Among the United States and
more specifically right now among Gainesville there is an opportunity that needs
to be taken advantage of and unmet needs that need to be taken care of. The opportunity
is the chance to involve and grow communities through a grocery store as well
as help individuals with lower income to have the same opportunities to food
sources more specifically healthy food services as those in high classes of
income. The unmet need within the opportunity to get
and stay healthy comes with the adequate amount of resources to reach set life goals
of having the chance of choice. Those that have the need to be healthy is the
ones that want that healthier life the ones that what better for themselves and
others as well as those that are already healthy and wish to maintain that. This
need is not gender, age, nor race specific. This is something that anyone can
experience. However, this need in the sense to which I wish to obtain a change
is social economically based. Potential customers
are those in the lower income areas those who live in the areas of Gainesville that
do not have access to grocery stores at all or places close to get good quality
healthy food. This is not a new need it has existed for a while the need to
live a life where you are healthy live long to watch your kids have kids
instead of worrying about weight, food or activities that could kill you due to
your health. Right now the environment is
changing from a famer produced food to a more processed quick solution food
base environment. In my opinion this the switch from healthy to quick and unhealthy
is the force creating the opportunity. Another situation or thing creating the opportunity
is how the store find and settle down in their location due to them not focusing
on certain areas it creates the opportunity to involve the health produce. As
of right now people are trying their best to live that healthy lifestyle like
get the good foods when they can, work out when they can and several other ways
to stay healthy. I am more than 80% sure that this opportunity exists. This opportunity
is large in the aspect that it effects a lot of people however it is under the
service because people do not think it is a necessity nor is it a true need. This
window of opportunity will be open and available for a while unless there is a
change that takes those unmet needs and turns them into a chance of
opportunity.
To customers I will provide healthier
environments so issues that we have is the lack of grocery stores in low income
areas, which in turn drives individuals away from going to those grocery stores
to get fresh produce they go to the local fast foods that are a lot closer,
will actually provide those to the option to get the sources of protein, fiber,
nutrition they need. That in itself will solve one problem and as far as the
cost healthier food is only about $1.50 more which will average to about $550
per year more. Now in the lower income scales of things that may be too much.
In time there Is a way to make healthier foods more accessible. This way is the
product/service I will provide which is a grocery store in those areas that
need it getting fresh produce and foods that are needed for a reasonable price.
Once we switch to the healthier side of things it will become a trend and
although the production of healthier food is more time consuming, the food
policies support inexpensive high volume production of food because that is
more accessible to individuals I plan to provide high quantities of healthy
food like fruits, vegetables and more. The grocery stores will get its produce
from local farmers in those areas as well as selling the produce for lesser
value than the market price. This will work because if I am capable of having
these foods in abundance as well as selling other products in the grocery store
to produce revenue sells will go up with affordable healthy food. Offering this product and serves to all
individuals in low income areas as well as just individuals looking to increase
their health. This service will also help the local farmers in the areas to
gain money and revenue.
My solution will solve the opportunity
because it will take care of the unhealthy balance that lies in between the lower
income areas. Costumers will buy into and support my service because of the
uniqueness that it will possess such as; prices, location, products,
collaboration, dietitians, atmosphere, pick-up service, benefits, community
sponsoring, fabric for girls, and connection. In the beginning it will be a difficultly
to expect people to completely switch over but I think because of the location,
where we get the product from, the prices it will be completely more convenient.
Walmart, Publix, Aldi, Sam’s those are some of the competitors however, their
main weaknesses is they focus more on the populated high price areas rather
than the lower income convenient areas.
The most important resource
is the fresh produce of food such as vegetables and fruit. What makes this so
important is the place we get the product which is from farmers locally in
those areas. Another competitor beating thing I will have is dietitians that
work in the store that will assist anyone if everyone they can. The next move
would be to become worldwide and help change things into a plant based healthy environment
and help switch the communities around us to a healthy vibe. In five years
after having the store I see myself still doing a lot more things for communities
and opening more franchises of the grocery stores in more areas and more states
and other businesses such as gyms and other things health wise and maybe
launching my own diet plan, supplements and more.
Hello Brandee,
ReplyDeleteYour idea of establishing healthy grocery stores in low-income areas is an amazing idea. The problem of obesity in America needs to be addressed and the lack of access to health food and the abundance of fast food is one of the main issues. Your concept provided an in-depth description of how it can be accomplished. One thing I am curious and would want to know from you is if you are selling the food under market price, how would you sustain the store from opening since you aren't making a profit?
Brandee, I think the main problem is that groceries are priced different because of the method of agriculture. Organic food is priced higher than foods that are grown with chemicals and are saturated with unhealthy ingredients. I think your idea is affected by the agriculture market and the methods used to grow our foods. It would be nice to have all foods (organic or not) to be affordable to everyone, but it's not because that can also affect a stores ability to sustain itself and stay in business.

I like your vision of making this a community of healthy living where dieticians, local farmers and convenient locations all come together. I don’t know much about grocery, but I do know fresh is usually more expensive for a couple of reasons I’m aware of: (1) it is impossible to forecast the needs people have so you end up wasting and throwing out a lot of fresh produce- driving costs up, and (2) fresh organic farm goods to not have the economies of scale that large inorganic producers have. This will make it the combination of fresh and cheap very difficult. One chance to pull it off maybe a farmers market as you noted.
ReplyDeleteHello Brandee,
ReplyDeleteI think it's great that you identified a farmers' market as being a possible solution to the balance between providing quality produce while also providing it with the most minimal costs as possible to you. A good venture plan to look at might be Trader Joe's which provides organic food at very cheap prices. Having a similar grocery store within low-income areas is great, and I hope to see it achieved through your venture!
